Cuero has over 30 churches, with more than a dozen established before the turn of the century, four of which have Texas Hostorical Markers. As the storm survivors from Indianola moved to Cuero, their first community efforts were to establish their churches, one of those is St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Built in 1889, the original structure still houses the Sunday School classrooms. The sanctuary, dedicated in 1936, was built in a style taken from the early Spanish missions. In its three bell tower hangs a small copper bell ressurrected twice after it had been discharged, once in Indianola, and once again many years later by the Cuero Fire Department when they no longer needed it for a fire alarm bell. It is now the prayer bell. The land for St. Michael's Catholic church was donated in 1875, however, the church itself was not built until 1886. The First Methodist Church was organized in 1876. Grace Episcopal Church was began in 1874 with its church structure built in 1889.
